You Don't Have to Be Loud to excel at communicating!
"The quieter you become, the more you can hear." Ram Dass
There's no single right communication style.
Some people naturally hold back and process internally before speaking, while others think out loud and discover their ideas as they speak.
Each style has valuable strengths, and each has it's challenges.
You don't need to be louder to be an excellent communicator. In fact, your quietness, or learning to slow down and listen more, can be a superpower.
Growing up socially anxious, I learned how to turn my quiet nature into a communication asset that helped me connect more deeply with others. You can learn to do the same.
Being quiet gives you natural communication strengths:
- Think Deeply and Clearly: You don’t just speak mindlessly; instead, you create space for deeper, clearer thinking and more thoughtful insights.
- Truly Hear Others: Your natural listening skills help you connect and understand what others are really saying, not just the words but the meaning under them.
- Observe Communication in Action: By paying attention to how others communicate, you can develop a deeper understanding of what works, and what doesn’t, when it comes to connecting with people.
But if you’re thinking, “That’s not me”, perhaps because you feel:
- It's hard to jump into conversations, even when you have something to say, or
- You get lost in thought and miss the chance to share your ideas before the conversation moves on, or
- You stay quiet because putting your thoughts into words feels uncomfortable,
- Or, perhaps you find yourself saying more than you'd like because you're trying to make your point clearer, or
- You leave conversations wishing you'd expressed yourself more simply and succinctly.
In my experience, that’s usually down to a couple of things:
Firstly, because you were quieter by nature you didn’t get much practise communicating growing up. You may not have been the child who shot up their hand in the classroom to answer a question the second a teacher asked it. Over time that meant you didn't have opportunities to practise, or grow in confidence communicating.
Secondly, if you're naturally more reflective, you may have spent lots of time processing your thoughts internally rather than expressing them out loud. As a result, communicating outwards can feel unfamiliar and sometimes uncomfortable.
The good news, as I discovered, is that great communication isn't a trait, it's a learned skill that anyone can develop.
With guided practice, great strategies, and a shift in focus, you can turn your quiet nature into one of your greatest strengths, and a communication superpower! 💪
